April 2008
From the
President's Desk
Dearest PMI
Memphis Community:
Your continued
commitment to the PMI Memphis, TN Chapter and your dedication to the
practice and growth
of project,
program and portfolio management is a gift to the Memphis economy
that can not longer be denied. As I meet with executives of local
companies there is more interest than ever in the results that
excellence in project management can bring to the bottom line. Your
accomplishments thus far in 2008 are building a platform to allow
our chapter, its members and local companies to assist stakeholders
and executive management in improving corporate performance for
shareholders while helping improve the Memphis economy.
The new
www.pmimemphis.org website provides you easier access to
information about your chapter, career opportunities, networking
sessions, training, meetings and links to relevant information and
products. Let me and our webmaster Tyler Dacus know your feedback.
The PMI Memphis
2008 Board of Directors continues its focus on budget and member
services. The chapter launched an annual sponsorship program and I
encourage you to share the details located at
PMI Memphis Sponsorship page with your company. The
program provides an excellent opportunity for companies to gain
visibility into the PMI Memphis community and for companies and
individuals to show their support of project management.
Chandy N.
Littlejohn, PMP your VP of Education closed out the second PMP
Preparatory class with fourteen students. The first ThyssenKrupp
Elevator (TKE) Business Outreach participant Vitality Skelektor
passed the exam just two day after the class. Congratulations to
Vitaliy and I look forward to
hearing about the success of our other students. Three additional
PMP Exam Preparatory classes are planned in 2008; June, August and
October. Dawn Barker is another student that wasted no time
obtaining PMP accreditation shortly after completing the PMP
Preparatory workshop. Congratulations, Dawn.
Ed Nichols your VP
of Programs has crafted what I expect to be one of the best monthly
meetings in the history of PMI Memphis. This special meeting
includes discount pricing for all participants; members $10, non
member $15 and students free. The May 6th meeting now
schedule at the Fogelman Executive Center is sponsored by the
University of Memphis and Cook Systems. Register at the
PMI Memphis Chapter Meetings page.
Did
you know as a member of PMI Memphis you receive member rates for
Memphis Regional Chamber events, products and services? Visit the
Memphis Chamber of Commerce Benefits page for details.
Our PMI vision
that worldwide organization will attribute their success to project
management is alive and well in Memphis and our PMI Memphis
Community. Watch for details as we expand the PMI Memphis Business
Outreach Program to TKE Germany and Spain and well as other Memphis
based businesses.
Sincerely,
Debra J. Arnett,

Professional credentials can help project managers
climb to the executive suite.
by Libby Ellis
Even project managers with stellar project skills, reputable
track records and resumes that demonstrate a rise through the
ranks are not always in line for executive-level positions. The
missing piece could be professional credentials. More and more,
project managers around the world find that earning the Project
Management Professional (PMP®) or the Program
Management Professional (PgMP)SM credential could
help them move into the executive suite.
Tips for Consultants to Gain Respect
Project management consultants must win respect from
their team members, even on high-stress, short-term assignments.
by Jeffrey Steele
Project management consultants rarely have time to develop
the same rapport with their teams that organization-based
project managers have. But they still need to win the respect
and confidence of team members from project to project and from
organization to organization.
