Project Management Volunteer Opportunity – Event Coordination

What: The Memphis Youth Hockey League (http://www.eteamz.com/memphisyouthhockey),  known as “MYHL”, is a non-profit organization promoting and managing youth ice sports in the Memphis area and is hosting a youth ice hockey tournament event over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend (November 27-30, 2008) at the DeSoto County Civic Center in Southaven, MS.  

Function/Mission of Role:  The organization is seeking volunteer help in the area of project management and event coordination.  The primary mission is to help manage the coordination and planning aspects of the event. The role is temporary beginning immediately and concluding with the event. The number of hours estimated for this commitment is between 1-2 hours per week for no more than 16 weeks.

Responsibilities: 

·         Serve as a primary contact for a committee of volunteers

·         Help organize a Project Kick-off meeting, compile notes, and document “next steps”

·         Maintain a basic project plan and schedule of tasks in an effort to ensure proper delegation of tasks, adherence to timelines, and general facilitation of activities

·         Organize meetings with the committee and provide status updates to Board and other key stakeholders

·         Identify and report risks as required, escalating as necessary

 

Requirements:  

·         Basic MS Office skills: Word, Excel and Outlook knowledge required; must be able to create, develop, maintain a simple project plan, most likey in Excel

·         Organizational, time management, and basic project management skills

·         Verbal and written communication skills

·         PMP or CAPM designation is a plus, but not required

·         Youth sports activity coordination or experience a plus, but not a requirement

·         Volunteer participation to actually help run the actual event is not required and would be out of the scope of this engagement, unless he/she desires otherwise
